Home security should be your top priority when moving into a house. All homes should have some form of security system. The best preventative security measures homeowners can install include an alarm, motion sensors for the doors and windows, and outdoor beams. Evaluate the needs for your area and choose a system you are comfortable with. Security measures are only as good as the product itself and the company installing them. Always remember that cheaper is not always better.
When encountering a break in without an alarm system activated remember to:
- Stay calm – don’t be a hero – suspects are almost always armed and not afraid to kill
- Do not engage any armed suspects
- Comply with all instructions
- Try to note all distinguishing factors – accents, origins, shoes, clothing etc
- Do not call any stolen cell phones as this alerts the suspects to them and often creates tracking the device impossible
